A day with the monks of Carlin

As you may know, near Carlin is a monastery called "Moonkeep". The most well-known order of monks resides there. Those monks have strange habits and are the cause of many rumours in the community, so my editor ordered me to go undercover and report about their business(I work as a reporter for TibiaNews, worlds biggest newspaper, didn't I tell yet?). It was not very difficult to get in there, since I am pretty skilled in using disguises. I joined a small group that just got instructions to search treasures in the desert of Ankrahmun. Just what I liked! So we traveled together, and on the way I made clear that I was a new monk and that I would like to learn a lot. They didn't talk much, though. After a long trip we arrived in the desert of Ankrahmun. There they took small shovels from under their cloaks and started to dig very fast trough the upper layer of sand. It was more like sieving. I didn't have a shovel myself, so I watched them a bit and gave them water (it was near an oasis). Then suddenly one of the monks gave a short yell, and while I looked up, a big creature came up out of the desert. It was green, shaped like a bug, but it looked very old and strong. The monks seemed to have been waiting for this, because as one man they started to attack the creature. And how! It was very clear, those monks were masters in martial arts! Faster than my eyes could follow, low kicks and sweeping fists, then some crushing sound and the beast lay down, green slime seeping from it's broken, convulsing remains. One of the monks grabbed his shovel and stabbed it deep inside the creature, just behind the first leg. Then he grabbed with his whole arm in the wound, and got a shiny coin out of it! He gave it to me to clean it a bit, and I saw that it must be a very old one. It was shaped to reproduce a creature like the one at my feet, and it seemed to be pure gold. So this was the treasure they searched for... The monks explained me how those creatures, they called them Scarabs, were the guards of the desert, protecting ancient treasuries and wisdom. We spend a whole day that way, just digging and killing many Scarabs, sometimes we found a coin in the sand, sometimes we found one inside one of those guards. In the end, it was very clear for me how those monks got their wealth: a matter of hard work. I will report back to my editor, but I doubt he finds it interesting enough to publish an article about it. And to be honest, if it is up to me, those monks should be allowed to search for treasures in peace, without readers of the newspaper from all over the world as competitors.

Dear Mr. Borceforth,

I am curious to know if, during your investigation of these monks, you ever heard tell of a Brother Uri. I, along with many of my friends, have received copies of a mysterious letter that apparently originated with this monk who lived over 800 years ago:

“I, a most pious, righteous and humble monk, send this letter to you, a wicked sinner and heretic. Demonstrate that you accept the wisdom of Uman the Wise by sending ten copies of this letter to ten sinners as wicked as you. Do this, and your rewards in this life as well as the hereafter will be abundant. Fail, and surely you will burn in the fiery pits of Hells Gate for eternity.

Repent, Heretic!

Signed,
Brother Uri Bohlen”

Whoever sent this claimed that it is something called a "chain letter" and implied that bad fortune would fall upon me if I did not do as instructed. For example, "A Master Sorcerer from Thais received the chain. She forgot it and a few days later a lured Giant Spider killed her husband. She found the chain letter and sent it to 10 people. Five days later she found an even better husband." (I sent out 10 copies immediately, of course).

I apologize for my lengthy post, but I feel these details are of the utmost importance and warrant the attention of a scholar such as you. Is this a hoax? Or does a powerful force indeed emanate from this enigmatic and ancient letter. As I have received over 70 copies (and therefore now face the daunting prospect of dispatching 700 more), I would be most grateful for your expert appraisal.

Thanking you in advance for your time and consideration, I remain,

Respectfully yours,

Bluerhino

P.S. Although I am told that sometimes letters like these are used to make money, this particular “chain letter” contains the phrase "SEND NO MONEY!"
